    Description

    -The Arizona Meteor Crater-
    A fine aerial in this
    5" x 7" Print
    of the
    Arizona Meteor Crater
located about 30 miles west of Flagstaff. The crater was made about 50,000 years ago during a time when the area was an open grassland dotted with woodlands inhabited by woolly mammoths, giant ground sloths, and camels. It was uninhabited by humans, the first of whom are thought to have reached North America only around 13,000 years ago.
    Also known as
    The Barringer Meteorite Crater
, it's essentially a gigantic hole in the middle of the arid sandstone of the Arizona desert. A rim of smashed and jumbled boulders, some of them the size of small houses, rises 150 feet above the level of the surrounding plain. The crater itself is nearly a mile wide, and 570 feet deep.
The nickel-iron meteorite that caused this crater was about 150 feet across and struck the plain somewhere between 30,000 and 45,000 mph. The impact dug out around 175 million tons of rock and yielded 2.5 mgt. of energy released, approximately 150 times the yield of
    Gadget
the first atomic bomb detonated at the Alamagordo, New Mexico test site on July 16, 1945.
Much more impact energy, equivalent to an estimated 6.5 megatons, was released into the atmosphere and generated a devastating above-ground shock wave that moved out at 1,200 mph and leveled everything within a radius of 13 miles which dissipated to hurricane-force winds that persisted to a radius of 25 miles.
A meteorite this size striking New York would easily destroy the entire city and far beyond.
