HISTORICAL NOTE
:
CIVIL WAR UNION INFANTRY
The
infantry
in the American
Civil War
comprised foot-soldiers who fought primarily with small arms, and carried the brunt of the fighting on battlefields across the United States. Historians have long debated whether the evolution of tactics between 1861 and 1865 marked a seminal point in the evolution of warfare.
The United States had always maintained a small army; the Founding Fathers feared a large army could be used by a Napoleon-like figure to overthrow the democratically elected government. In times of crisis, the various states were expected to provide volunteer militias of citizen-soldiers to swell the army’s ranks until the crisis had been dealt with. Accordingly, when the Civil War broke out, the U.S. Army had only about 26,000 men, scattered from the Atlantic to the Pacific. Weakening it further, a large portion of its West Point–educated officer corps resigned to fight for their home states of the South. Likewise, the cavalry arm was predominantly composed of Southerners who left to join the armies of the Confederacy. Only the artillery saw few, if any defections; this is one of the reasons that Union artillery enjoyed superiority over that of the South throughout the war.
After
Fort Sumter
was fired on, President
Abraham Lincoln
called for 75,000 ninety-day volunteers to suppress the Southern rebellion. From beginning to end, state units made up the vast majority of the army. To distinguish these amateurs from the professionals of the regular army, soldiers in the regular army wore uniforms of dark blue coat and pants; volunteers wore dark blue coats but light blue pants.

Not quite as ubiquitous as the Kubelwagen, the Schwimmwagen was still a fairly common sight on German battlefronts on the East and Western Fronts. This new model has the top cover up and has been given a thin coat of whitewash over its original grey exterior. A well-wrapped up driver and a standing Feldgendarme complete the set. - See more at: schwimmwagen-winter-p-1098.html#sthash.YJMI6wwJ.dpuf

Note: It has been some years since we last visited the hallowed grounds of Gettysburg, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Petersburg and Cold Harbor. Since then our focus has shifted from our travels to these earlier U.S. historical sites, to a more expanded travel schedule that matched better with our interest in World War II. We have in October 2019, completed travel to the Netherlands, including stops in Eindhoven and Arnhem, as well as extended travel in Germany... some 2500 Km. visiting a number of the WWII sites as well as several of the
World War II
museums. In addition, we have previously visited All of the Five Landing Beaches along the Normandy coastline and nearly all of the museums in and around the Norman towns on several occasions. We have also spent time,
on several occasions
including during our most recent travel, in the Bastogne area, including the Baugnez '44 Museum, site of the Malmedy Massacre, The Bastogne War Museum and the pastoral surrounding area in Belgium. We have found both the French, Belgian and Nederlander people, especially in and around the Normandy, Bastogne and Arnhem area, to be very friendly and still grateful to the Allies, especially the American forces, for their liberation… despite the huge loss of life and property damage suffered by the French, Belgian and Dutch civilians. In addition, if you are planning to visit the area in and around Normandy, Bastogne, the Netherlands or perhaps in Germany,
we would be willing to share our experiences or trip itinerary with you,
which may
help to make your travel through the areas easier and perhaps make the historical experience more valuable
