    Description

During the Civil War Era 1783-1865 there was a large trade in renting slaves that had pictular talents in the city of CHARLESTON.
The CITY OF CHARLESTON imposed a tax on the all slaves rented out, they were required to have a copper tag thatn was worn around the slaves neck. These tags had a number a date and an occupation. These tags have become a very collectable item.
The largest collection I have seen is in the CHARLSTON CITY museum.
For further information see the book SLAVE BADGES and the SLAVE-HIRE SYSTON IN CHARLESTON, SOUTH CAROLINA 1783-1865
