JIMMY PHILLIPS
GRABS ANOTHER
CHAMPIONSHIP
Phillips, Kretz and Gunter
Make It a Clean Sweep for Triumph
at California State Championship
T T Races
RIVERSIDE, Calif., Nov. 11.—At the
Box Springs Canyon T.T. race held No-
vember 11th at Riverside, Calif., Jimmy
Phillips displayed the riding ability that
marks him as one of the outstanding
T.T. riders of the country.
Phillips, winner of both Peoria T.T.
National Championship Titles, added one
more championship to his long list of
victories. He finished a half lap ahead
of second place man Ed. Kretz, Sr. (the
grand old man of racing), who was
very closely pursued by Ray Tanner for
third place. Win Young finished fourth,
followed by Bert Brundage.
Box Spring Canyon’s tricky kidney-
shaped track is a real test for man and
machine alike. The weather was perfect
for racing, not too hot or too cold, al-
though it got pretty chilly as the race
did not finish until almost dark.
Of the 200 entries, only 14 qualified
for the Main Event. Such well known
Champions as Ed Kretz, Sr., Win Young,
Tom Turner, Ray Tanner, Bobbie Tur-
ner, Jimmy Phillips, Bert Brundage and
Eddie Kretz, Jr.
Fastest time of the day went to “lit-
tle” (I use the word loosely) Eddie
Kretz, Jr., riding a Triumph Thunder-
bird. Eddie’s time of 46:35 seconds also
broke the track record. Eddie won the
Trophy Dash, but was not presented the
Trophy in the customary manner, I mean
by a beautiful girl and the customary
kiss. Maybe they figure Eddie is a little
young yet. Novice final went to Albert
Gunter on a Triumph.
The main event was a thriller from
the start. Jimmy Phillips jumped into
the lead at the start and there he re-
mained. For several laps Tom Turner
was second, followed closely by Eddie
Kretz, Jr. Eddie in trying to pass Tur-
ner at “Young Gulch” (so called be-
cause of the jinx it has held on Win
Young) was forced into the bank and
down went Turner and Kretz, Jr., Eddie
losing out on what might have been a
clean sweep. Ed Kretz, Sr., then took

Eddie Kretz Jr. made

planted Texan, took

rapidly becoming a
power on the coast....
